May have just been a loose connection or slightly corroded terminal.

Could be the brushes sticking. They will get to a spot where the starter doesn't work but if you take it off it will move the armature and get to a point will it will work again. One way to check to see if its the starter is to put the bike in gear and use jumper cables and put the negative on a bolt on the frame somewhere and the positive on the nut that holds the starter wire on. If it turns over your starter is fine. If it doesn't you have an issue with the starter. but when doing this make sure the bike is in neutral or your bikes going for a ghost ride.
