You really need the bike in the air so you can spin the rear wheel to make sure the belt is tracking properly in the pulley as you adjust it. It's tricky to get it just right in the air so I can only imagine how difficult it would be doing it on the ground.

If you have a garage I took ratchet straps around the top of the forks and rafters to keep it from tipping then just used a regular floor jack on the crossmember. The bike is balanced about perfect. You will need to have someone to help keep it from shifting while you tighten up axel bolt, or just lean into the tire a little while you do it.
