Gooday all,

I'm new to the world for bikes so this question might be all noob no experience.

How much backlash should there be when on and off the throttle?

For example, if I'm cruising in first or second gear and let off the throttle to coast to a slower speed then get back on the throttle the tranny seems to take a sec to catch up to the acceleration and clunks

I've asked a couple fellow riders and have been told there bikes don't do that.

Is it a Stryker thing, a driver thing, or a problem with my bike

Adjust the throttle lever to take up the slack in cable. This condition seems to go away after first service and as you get accustomed to bike- you won't even remember it happening anymore.

Not sure if it's a Stryker thing or a Yamaha thing. I do notice a bit more backlash on the Stryker than On my previous bike. I also noticed that the Yamaha FJ I used to own had similar characteristics. It is something you get used to. As 11Stryker said double check the throttle cable adjustment (and clutch cable while your there). I'm just guessing but I would think that it has to do with the tooth profile of either the primary gears or the tranny gears.

New all along but was told that exesive trany lash is primarily a drive belt adjustment problem. Although the Stryker does seem to have a bit more than average. For example after getting serviced last week our belts are far tighter than ever before but still the 950 has no lash when comparing it to the Stryker.
Found out this week that loose belt tension is the primary cause of 3 symptoms, exsesive lash, hesitation in throttle response/flat spot and surging. For those of you that are experiencing those symptoms the fix may be as simple as tightening the belt. Seems that a loose belt causes a momentary signal in the load sensor that tells the ECU there is no load causing the flat spot or hesitation in throttle response.
It is important to check your belt tension at 600 mile, first service, and at 2 to 3,000 mile intervals, every oil change. I now will be checking mine more often than that due to the extreme roads I ride.

Good call Toby. I didn't even think to mention the final drive as the original poster was talking bout the tranny but your right a loose drive belt would cause exactly those symptoms. to many years dealing with chains and carbs!

Got rid of my backlash by tightening belt.

Ya Joe I've noticed twice now, one time after my own adjustment the after having tires put on at Humboldt Performance Cycle, that mechanic is strictly a HD mechanic, the belts were loose compared to how the dealer mech and now North Coast Cycle, Who is strictly a Bike mechanic shop, adjusted them.
Surprising how tight they are now. 1/4 " maybe 1/2" with a lot of pressure to get it to move that far.
So if you can get it to move a 1/2 in with little pressure it's to loose. I will be investing in a gauge.

HAHA, I noticed that too once I put my 240 on. I put the wheel back on myself. I bought the belt tension tool and an anolog/digital caliper tool. Sweet now. Gonna change the oil on my lunch break. I am looking to see what the torque spec is for the flange nutz, I know I wrote it down somewhere. Time to re-torque a few things that I put my wrench to.

I just wish the lash would go away like it is on my wife's 950.:( That bike is tight, no lash at all. The 240 does make a world of difference too.

Thanks for the heads up Toby...I checked my belt yesterday and it was surprisingly loose! I'm about due for my 16K service but I guess the belt didn't wanna wait 400 more miles! I tightened it up and things seem much improved. I was shocked at how much it had loosed up since the last service. I will now make it a point to check the belt every 2,500 miles. I just use my finger but I guess I should invest in a good tension gauge. Any recommendations?

I think I read somewhere by the real GANGSTER SmokenJoe. Just hold a tape measure to it from the ground and it should only play between .75 and 1 inch, he is a true gangster.,
Page 7-23 owners manual. Between .20 and .28 in at 10 lbf. That's not very much. 1/4 of play. Like I said if you can move it more than a 1/4 in with your fingers it's too loose.

Mines much looser than that. Probably 1/2" 10lbs. But with belt any tighter I get a whine and bike is harder to push around. I don't have any backlash problems at all either.
