I just bought a 2013 and some V&H twin slash. I want to put a different air intake, but what I don't know is do I need to purchase a tuner or programmer for the bike if I change out both. Any help would be appreciated. Haven't decided on air intake yet.

As other's will be sure to chime in... just from what I have read on the extensive amount of information here in the forum. the easy answer is YES.
If you have one - either exhaust mod OR air intake mod... then Not yet needed.
When you get both... then Definately needed.

Now as to the difference between programmer vs auto tunner -
I believe (correct me ppl if i state incorrectly) that it is advised to get the bike dyno'd (tho not absolutely neccessary) to get optimum performance.

With the Auto Tuner- ie Cobra's AT - the $500 + one... that it does not need to be dyno'd since it is constantly being calibrated -(something like 60-80 x / sec).

Do a search on the forums here and it will take you a few hours to get through all the information... but there is a lot and very insightfull!

You will need an autotuner once you add an after market air intake along with your exhaust. Personally I went with the Cobra Power Flo and the Power Pro autotuner. Installed, started it up and was driving within 45 minutes for both. I'm also running the Cobra slip-ons. Great combination for me.

You can install what ever mods you would like.............ride and see if you need one or not. I am riding a cobra slip-on and an opened air box and runs great. Lots of good info on post listed above.
My dealer has said he has never had a bike come into the shop from problems not having a tuner with both mods.

Well I guess I'll just have to purchase the air intake, install it and see what happens. Thanks for the replies. Be back in country on the 19th. Can't wait to ride my new stryker.

I'm new to this bike and trying to figure this out too. Isn't the problem with adding a more open exhaust and intake that the bike would run to lean and the danger of damaging pistons/cylinders? Other bikes i've worked on run really good lean until you stick a piston, so i'd think that you wouldn't be able to tell just by how it ran but by checking for if it was running lean or not.

:thumb::nod::thumb: Your right! No matter how many bells and whistles you can get for cheap, it is hard for me to buy a used bike. Unless you know who you are buying it from.

Maybe with fuel injection you can get away with it? it would be nice not having to spend the $$$, still i think you should pull the plug after awhile and check it.

Keep us updated, my V&H's are on the way i'm going to ditch the stock airbox soon after.

I added the Cobra 4" slip-on and ran that way fine until I opened up the Air intake and added a K&N Filter, once I did that I started getting some serious poping during deceleration, since I added the Cobra Auto tuner it has been great.

Took my V&H twin slash pipes and cobra powerflo intake for a spin last night and my bike doesn't act any leaner than it was stock. The O2 sensor is unplugged which helped eliminate a lot of the low speed chugging. Have the new EJK tuner on the work bench, but almost feel I don't need it. I suppose I should at least try it to see if it wakes the bike up a little more...
