So I just contacted my dealer for the 6 month/4000 mile service and I was quoted $450 plus tax and when I balked he said they had to do the valve train adjustment because the factory came out with a service update that changed the periodicity of this service from 16000 miles to 4000.

I called the factory and they have said that there is NO SERVICE UPDATE that changes the periodicity from 4 to 16k. Has anyone else heard this or dealt with it? Before I raise **** with my dealership I'd like to know what y'all have heard on this????

sounds like b.s. to me

Unfortunately, my local dealer seems to be on the high end of prices compared to what I've read guys paying for various services at other Yami dealerships. I figure it may have something to do with the fact that I didn't buy my Stryker from them.

Wow all I can say is wow, another shady dealer mechanic? It doesn't surprise me. It never ends.

Well I called two other dealers one a county over and one a state over and got two different answers. The one out of state said the same thing my local dealership did. That there is a "service update" that changes from 16k to 4k. And the one in the county over laughed and said that he had NO update and that it was 16k for the valve adjustment.

Not only that but he asked me if I really, really needed him to pull my spark plugs and tell me that they have 4000 miles on them, and that if I didn't he'd save me 1.5 hours of labor and only change the oil with a walk around. Total out the door for labor, oil and filter... $120

And now that I know that the valve adjustment isn't due I'll do the oil change myself.

I just can't believe a) how shady dealerships are and b) how stupid the general public can be to not even verify something like this.

I did a short search on the net and came up with nothing. You would think that if there was such a drastic change in the amount of miles for a valve adjustment that Yamaha would send out a notice and it would be on recall paid for by the Corp. This is one reason I bought Yamahas because of very low maintenance.
So such fraudulent practice should be addressed. Notify the management and/or owner. More than likely there is embezzlement going on. I've seen this before, they right up a duplicate receipt and some one returns and gets reimbursed for work not done and it goes in their pocket.

Are you near Hinshaws in Auburn? They are a Stand up business! I do lots of business with them and they have never done me wrong. Email them with your predicament and they will give you a straight answer... My bike is going to them in about another 300 miles...

No but I talked with Tacoma Motorsports and they gave me the straight and skinny. I'm working with my local dealer right now to see if it was just a mistake on the Service Department's part. But thanks for the input!!!!

If I'm not mistaken there just tappets? If your worried in the slightest just check them for clearance? ??? It's not much harder than changing the oil? It takes basic tools and is easy to check. Most shops charge a set fee to adj. the valves if they check them and their in spec. less work for them same money for you.

Just a thought?

Every thing they do for every service is in the service manual. Its all pretty easy stuff and it walks you though step by step. If you can change the oil on your car you can change the oil and do most of the maintenance on the bike. It tells you want to check and what to change and how to do it. So don't be afraid to do the work yourself and save a bunch of money.
