I'm going to be installing the Kuryakyn Run-Turn-Brake controller, and need to replace my rear amber turn signal bulbs with red ones. Does anyone know if other then 12v, is there a specific one I need to get?

I'm seeing Single Filament, Dual Filament, Single Contact, Dual Contact... Different wattages... I'm a little confused. I don't want to get the wrong one and have it blow, or have it too dim, or not signal correctly... Any ideas?

Blackvapor, Did you end up ordering one of these? I would like to add one of these to my bike and just started looking into this and not sure which unit to buy. I also am looking for one that has the backoff brake blink and like you not sure if I need to buy bulbs or if it comes with them. Any information you can share?

Yeah, I did get one one these.

http://www.amazon.com/Kuryakyn-4612-Plug-Run-Turn-Brake-Controller/dp/B000RH0LFK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375391502&sr=8-1&keywords=Kuryakyn+4612

It's an all in one unit...

1. Changes the amber turn signals to running lights / brake lights.
2. Flashes the brake lights (all 3) 3 times then goes solid every time you hit the brakes.
3. The 4612 is completely plug and play. You pop off the small left side body panel, and plug this unit in between the white connectors that run to the rear light assembly.

Also, you will need to purchase the red replacement bulbs. I found a screaming deal online. A Powersports place had the good Drag Specialities bulbs for $7.49 each(!!!) After a quick search, I found an MC/ATV site that had the same ones for .95 cents each.

Thanks Blackvapor, Those look to be like some great prices.

When I got my kit I ordered what they call a "Triple Whammy" for Yamaha. It came with the kit, load resistor and the red single filament bulbs. It was a direct plug and play kit. I didn't have to cut any wires. The "hardest" part was just finding the right spot for it under the seat.

On a side note, I've been thinking of removing the whole tail light/license plate holder and putting the turn signals on the fender. I think that would look real smooth.

The tabs on the bottom of the bulbs are different. It's a staggered pin on the bottom of the Stryker bulbs, but the auto store ones are even and don't fit in the Stryker bulb socket. It's really annoying.

Ok I have to admit I'm really confused here. For the record I have the Custom Dynamics LED's for mine which are different but...

The OEM front lollipops are run/turn and the rears are turn only. Therefore the rears have a single pin in the socket and, thus, the socket cannot work with a 2 filament bulb. Looked on the Amazon link and Kury's site but pictures are different. They'd have to supply a replacement socket for things to work properly. That said my front OEM bulbs that I took out and replaced were just normal 1157 dual intensity bulbs. That same bulb(in red) would be what the rear would need and the controller determines if the high intensity is on/off, flashing, blinking or steady. Low intensity would always be on once the ignition key is on.

So what am I missing here??

BTW, The CD led versions for the rear aren't totally plug & play at all. Besides a possible need to "fit" the cluster to your OEM lenses by sanding/filing them down you need to run the 2 extra wires(run/brake) back to the appropriate connector and splice them in or make connector loops to just plug in.
I like the led approach but depending on the answers to my questions I'd have to recommend this kit since it does the same thing as my separate brake flasher and light swap for a measurable amount less once you factor in the above and the led compatible flasher replacement(corrects the fast blink after converting to led's) I did/am doing my work over 3 seasons so it all made sense at the time but if I were to do it again and didn't have to have the LED's this kit looks promising.

Maybe if the pictures were clearer or if I could find the directions on-line it'd make more sense to me. Mine is stored for the winter so too difficult to check anything right now. Plus it is 20 whopping degrees right now(up from a low of 4 last night) so my visits to the garage are brief, infrequent and unpleasant :(

Took my turns apart. Fronts have three pins but only two contacts. I believe the third pin is for location only. So the high low pins will work.
Rears are 2 pins on the same plane.
As I said before the bulbs are 1156/1157s. They will work.

The front turn signals are two filament.
The rear turn signals are single filament with 170° pins. The reason for that is to make sure you put amber bulbs in the rear. Red bulbs are just now becoming more popular due to some European cars starting to use them.
As far as the Kuryakyn kit goes it still uses the single filament bulbs. It uses an intricate circuit setup to make the lights work like two filament bulbs. If you get the "Triple Whammy" kit for Yamaha it comes with the correct red bulbs. If you already got the "Run Turn Brake" kit by itself you can get the bulbs from Kury.

Interesting. They must then vary the voltage to change the intensity. Works I guess...

On a separate question "Does anyone know where to get the connectors(male/female) for the brake/run wires?" To add in the CD led's I'd prefer to not have to clip wires and just make a connector cable.

you cannot use LED lights with the Kuryakyn kit. the low load of the LED lights won't let it work as a low intensity high intensity light. its design for incandescent bulbs. if you want to use LED lights you need to get the custom dynamic kit with the adjustable setting for the running light.
custom dynamics also makes the LED cards that fit our bikes with the light bulb plug so you don't have to modify the bike. I bought a set for mine and they didn't work properly. instead of sending them back I sold them to a buddy who is not going with a run turn brake kit.
like I said on here before I went with the triple whammy kit for Yamaha which is a straight plug n play kit with zero modifications to the bike.
