I have heard some people comment that the single best mod they have done to their bike was to add an EFI tuner like the Cobra PowrPro or PCV.

I don't exactly understand what to expect from it. Can someone please describe it to me before and after?

Also any help in choosing the PCV or Cobra would be appreciated.. I've been trying to understand the difference between the two and I'm a bit lost.

Thanks

Modern electronically fuel injected bikes are tuned pretty lean from the factory in order to meet the stricter Government EPA standards. If you add both an exhaust system and a high flow air intake to the mix it only exacerbates the lean condition and can negatively affect performance, efficiency, and the life of the engine. The various EFI Programmers on the market aim to correct the lean condition by adding fuel and or adjusting engine timing. The two programmers you mentioned in your post are both “auto tuners” with means you don’t have to manually adjust any settings, download any maps, or have it dyno tuned. They’re just plug and play units and they seem to work pretty well…though they’re quite pricey. A better option in the mind of many on this forum is the Gman Bully tuner. It gives you the ability to easily calibrate things on the fly to your individual preferences and it’s had some very strong user reviews…all for about half the price of the auto tuners you mentioned. Several have reported it actually outperformed the Cobra PowrPro auto tuner that they had been using prior. As long as you choose a quality programmer and adjust it appropriately you can expect to feel some big power gains…even with a bone stock bike.

Actually the standard PCV is not an auto tuner. There is an option to add-on an auto tune module, but the standard PCV will require a map to work properly. Other than that, I agree with Skwerlee. The Gman Bully seems to be the current tuner of choice for many forum members.

Or similar to that is the EJK controller for a little bit less $$$.

Oops my mistake. Since he was comparing it to the Cobra Auto Tuner I figured he meant the PCV with the auto tuner function...like comparing apples to apples.

The addition of the PowerFlo Auto tuner, PowerFlo Air Intake and Cobra Swepts are without question the best money I have spent on my bike! The tuner took a bit of training ie red lining it first through fourth and then making it pull from fifty though 75 in fifth and wow...a whole new bike. The tuner does not effect timing however.

I installed the cobra 4" slipon and was getting serious popping on decel until I installed the auto tune. It was
Pretty ez to install after I added some duct tape to my pliers and used that to pull the connectors. Very tight under the tank

I agree that the cobra auto tune is the best. I need to get the cobra intake to feel some more power but love the looks of stock air box. I only suggest going pcv if you plan on racing since you can run bike lean or rich with different maps. Although the PCV does come with the auto tune if you want an auto dyno.

can someone please explain the different Cobra Tuners? I looked at the Cobra site and at cruisercustomizing and it seems that all there are about 4 different ones. Can you tell me which ones are best for our bike, please keep in mind i want to add one but don't really want to spend $500. I'd rather add one of the $2xx ones if I can.

Great thread - thanks. Was looking at the cobra swepts and cobra intake...didn't realize that adding both incurs yet another cost of fuel programming, but it makes sense. More air = more gas = EFI tuner. Doing all three simultaneously should generate a pretty big difference if I am tracking this correctly?
