It all has to do with which hemisphere you are in, and in some cases the rotation of the earth... bikes on the other side of the world have them on the right....

Not completely sure, but I believe it stems from mounting a horse on the left side.

Where that stems from I have no idea, but I would guess its a more natural motion as right handed people lead with their left foot first, using the dominate right foot for the technical motion (think football kick or lining up for a layup in basketball) in this case hitting the right side stirrup.

I'm sure the conversation went something like this:

"Which side should get get on this thing from?"
"The left side"
"Why's that?"
"Cause you mount a horse on the left. Mounting on the right is backwards"
"Well, that makes sense."

Maybe cause for most of the v-twins engines the exhausts are on the right side so it would be hard to open the kickstand of they were on the exhaust side

Mounting hores lol, or a horse from the left traditionally was due to wearing long bladed weapons on the left hip for right handed persons. Probably opposite for left handed warriors. Now a days horses are trained to be mounted from either side.
As for bikes I'll go with the planet rotation theory. As for whores your on your own lol.

It wouldn't look nearly as cool when you lined them up if they all went this way and that. You have to admit it's pretty cool going to a pub or a ride with a bunch of bikes all leaned to the left in a line.

I will say it's the only thing about my life that does lean to the left.
