Has anybody had this problem? Is there a trick to removing the seat or am I just not getting it?

Make sure you unlock it on the side.

Unlock it, lift up on the front then slide the whole thing rearward.

Unlock the front. Then slide it backwards. Then lift the pillion pad and slide it forward.

Dealer showed me how to do it but still took a few times to be able to do it smoothly. Once you get it off flip it over and look at the mounting hardware/points. That helped it make sense to me.

Be careful lifting the seat off/forward. Have seen a couple people bang the metal hitch on the bottom of the seat against the gas tank. Chipping your tank this way would really ruin your day.
