So the idea is to fill out the swingarm with a dunlop elite 3 250/40/18 and be able to use its profile as intended. I began the project by removing the wheel, having the tire removed, and sending the wheel down to Kosman in California to be widened out to 8 5/8". I would have gone for a full 9 inches but I don't know if that is going to give me enough clearance with the belt and swingarm.

I did not want to begin chopping or grinding the frame in the back so instead I began to pry it apart using a car jack. This proved to be a simple method and I managed to get enough clearance for the full width of the tire.

I have about two weeks of lead time before the wheel comes back but once it does I will get it powdercoated black again and take pictures after it's mounted and placed back on the bike.

Here is a picture of the carjack widening out the rear frame. Since this will lower the Fender support I will have to create spacers to Fill the gap between the fender and frame supports. Tomorrow I will chop off the spacers that go to the front of the fender. This will allow me to not have the fender bow out as much. I have also widened out the fender more to accommodate the wider frame.

Thats looks pretty good, but I have a question.

Did you order two 250 tires? That way when your frame breaks while your going 90 mph on the interstate, you'll have the coolest set of tires on your wheelchair.
You do know that the frame work aft of the seat is only there to support the weight of a passenger. A couple aftermarket rear fenders have you cut all the frame off and go with a solo seat. So what he is doing isn't dangerous at all.:tsk: Thing is most people are scared to step out on the limb. So the try knock the guy down that does so they don't look so bad.

I just found the link to one of the fenders.

Thanks for your concern, Bandit85. What I've done hasn't stressed the welds at all. I'm sharing what I'm doing incase others want another approach than cutting/rewelding or grinding away precious material.

LOL, when did you decide to become an internet troll?

He widened the fender support, not the frame; for those of you who missed that.

Thanks for the support, everyone. This is definitely an experiment so I offer NO guarantees on what the long term effects on the fender support strength will be but I feel confident the stretch will hold.

After speaking with Kosman we decided to go with 8.5" instead of 8.75" 1/4" overall width won't make much of a difference in the natural profile of the tire but it shouldn't allow it to contact the belt or swingarm. I'd rather play it safe than have to have it fixed :p

I'll keep everyone posted.

When this forum first started and the Stryker was just a few months old there was a dealer who put a true 250 tire with the proper rim on the Stryker with no major mod. They even advertised the rim and tire for sale that you could buy from them. I just can't remember who they were. Would have saved you alot of time and effort to just order off them, but can't remember who they were. Any of the founding members remember?

I have a Performance Edge upgrade on my Stryker and am running a 260 Metzeler with only die grinding the inside of the fender supports. It cleared without the grinding by about a credit card thickness, but I feel more comfortable with the extra clearance with the 1" drop.

Here's the Ebay advertisement to their stuff and you don't have to do much except bolt it on. Matt is great to deal with and the quality is second to none.

Very interesting. When I first got the dunlop E 3 I tried placing it between the fender supports. The supports were about 1/4" too narrow on either side so I splayed them out an inch.
